Congress debates the Farm Bill

Right now Congress is debating the 2013 Farm Bill. Unbeknownst to most people, the Farm Bill sets US farm and food policy. What food costs and what is available. Over the past 40 years it has incentivized the growing of commodities like corn and soy. In order to maximize profits multinational corporations have invented ways to make these commodities into products with the right combinations of fat, sugar and salt that are convenient and taste great but not only have little nutritional value, are actually bad for you. These commodities which are not the normal diet of cattle, are also used in the feed of animals in factory farms. This will eventually result in a health care crisis that will cost trillions. The current form of the Farm Bill has shifted the direct payments to a guaranteed profit insurance. This will ensure the continuation of bad farm policy.
